The Factory Tour
A Collaborative Creative Residency with Amy Kim Grogan
This August, Blank Canvas welcomes Scottish sculptor Amy Kim Grogan for a month-long residency at MAKE, Ayr.
Amy's practice explores the overlooked objects, systems and everyday actions that surround us, transforming the familiar through repetition, scale and material. For her Blank Canvas residency, she will transform the gallery into a functioning sculptural 'Factory', inspired by Ayr's industrial heritage, local food production and manufacturing culture.
As part of the project, Amy hopes to undertake research visits to local factories and production spaces to observe workflows, spatial organisation and the rhythms of labour. These visits will directly inform the development of the residency, helping to create an immersive environment that reflects Ayr's manufacturing landscape while opening up conversations around labour, making, sustainability and food production.
Throughout the month, visitors will be invited to become part of the factory through a series of interactive workshops exploring storytelling, sustainable mould-making and edible jelly sculpture, flavour development and taste testing. The residency will culminate in The Factory Tour, a public exhibition opening that celebrates the work created throughout the month and invites audiences inside Amy's evolving sculptural factory.
About Amy Kim Grogan
Amy Kim Grogan is a Scottish sculptor who graduated with Distinction from the MFA programme at the Glasgow School of Art in 2022. Prior to undertaking her MFA, she completed a BA (Hons) in Sculpture at the Glasgow School of Art in 2017. Her work regularly stems from disrupting and/or emphasising overlooked objects and acts, arising from a fundamental interest or occasional discomfort. Through increased scale, multiples, and material, she relays this curiosity in works that collectively exert absurdity and often humour.
